The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The professorship is located at the Institute of Design and Architecture IEA (www.iea.arch.ethz.ch).
The new professor is mainly responsible for teaching a design studio and giving lectures for students in the Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree programme in Architecture (including master thesis) and will teach theoretical foundations, methodological skills and specialized knowledge in the field of adaptive re-use. She/he should emphasise one of the following focal points: i) Structure and construction with focus on the role of construction and structural transformation in adaptive re-use, including the potential of future change in new built structures and the exploration of digital tools and processes. ii) Urban typologies with focus on the impact of societal change and urban transformation on adaptive re-use, including the potential of existing buildings for the development of new spatial configurations and urban typologies. Contemporary digital design and production techniques are, in general, an integral part of the sustainable architectural debate.
The new professor is expected to propose and develop a state-of-the-art research agenda. The focus is on the investigation and development of relevant topics that contribute to the advancement of architecture as a discipline, in mutual interaction between theory and practice. She/he will cooperate with professorships among the Department of Architecture and across various ETH departments. Of particular importance is the collaboration with the existing chairs at the Institute of Design and Architecture.
The successful candidate must have a substantial built œuvre and competence in design and realization of high-quality buildings with a strong emphasis on adaptive re-use. Her/his qualification includes a university degree, accreditation by architects and usually experience, both in research and teaching. Competence in leading a group and contribution to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the discipline are expected. In general, at ETH Zurich courses are taught in German or English.
