CALL TO ACTION COP 29. Building Professionals Demand Climate Action!
As COP29 begins this call is as urgent as ever: The world is not on track! The construction sector is still responsible for about 42% of global GHG emissions. We must rapidly reduce emissions and resource consumption while ensuring a just transition, protecting livelihoods and human dignity!
We strongly support initiatives that address the challenges of the construction sector, such as the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction and BUILDING TO COP 29. But we still see an urgent need for action on all levels. With this unified call from building professionals, we are urging the industry to make a bold shift in its practices.
We call for recognition from world leaders! We are a coalition of architecture, landscape and built environment related climate action networks tackling the unjustifiable level of damage inflicted by the current building industry. We call global and local leaders gathered at COP29 to recognise the demands from our networks and to act urgently.
We demand a radical transformation! We need to turn problems into solutions. The global, extractive, and neo-colonial consumption of resources must be replaced by just and regenerative materials. Rapid demolition, (especially in the global North), must be avoided by the careful use of the existing resources and space. For new housing and infrastructure in rapidly urbanising places (mainly in the Global South), regenerative and climate-neutral standards must be applied.
We stand for a culture of peace! We are against all forms of war and violence that bring death and destruction to humanity and the planet. Peace is a foundation for coordinated, effective climate action, while conflict hampers efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Systems of oppression reinforce one another and climate activism is inextricably tied to solidarity with disenfranchised communities.
We urge immediate action! Each member of this coalition stands for a globally just transition to a decarbonised and healthy built environment, that is based on reconsidered needs, solidarity with indigenous communities, support for biodiversity and planetary boundaries.
We seek your support! COP29 is a decisive milestone. The construction sector is significant. We call all building professionals and decision makers to support our goals or join our coalition in making this a reality through collective action, sharing best-practices, and mobilising your peers. If you want to be part of the change, join our coalition today!
